GS1 standards are helping to save thousands of lives and millions of pounds.
What are GS1 standards?
GS1 is a global language for doing business. It is a set of uniform data structures that enable the unique coding of assets, people and places. The most common example of GS1 standards in action is the barcoding on products in a supermarket. However, the aerospace and automotive industries are among those who also rely on data standards to track finished products and component parts from source to point of use.
“The introduction of GS1 standards will allow every NHS hospital in England to save on average up to £3 million each year while improving patient care.”
Commonly used GS1 standards in healthcare include Global Trade Item Numbers (GTINs) to track products, Global Location Numbers (GLNs) to identify locations in the NHS, and Global Service Relation Numbers (GSRNs) to identify patients and clinicians.
